Cosmetic surgery became a trend over the past few years. However, in 2019, it’s more of a reality than anything. Before you get this type of surgery, you need to understand it. Get to know what it does. What do cosmetic surgeons do?
A cosmetic surgeon restores, reconstructs, or alters the human body. There are two categories. One is reconstructive surgery which includes craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and the treatment of burns. The second category is facial rejuvenation which includes facelifts, eyelid lifts, brow lifts, neck lifts, etc.
Does this sound like plastic surgery to you? Well, let’s look at the differences.
Cosmetic Surgery Vs. Plastic Surgery
If you’ve always thought cosmetic and plastic surgery were the same thing, don’t worry. In fact, we’ve all been there and done that, but believe it or not, there are fundamental differences. While both cosmetic and plastic surgery deal with improving a patient’s body, the overarching philosophies guiding the training, research, and goals for patient outcomes are different.
Cosmetic surgery focuses on enhancing your appearance. Although, improving aesthetic appeal, symmetry, and proportion are its main goals. Cosmetic surgery performs in all areas of the head, neck, and body. Doctors practice this type of surgery in different medical fields including plastic surgeons. Procedures include, but are not limited to, breast enhancement, facial contouring, body contouring, and skin rejuvenation.
Plastic surgery intends to correct dysfunctional areas of the body and is reconstructive in nature. In fact, this surgery dedicates itself to the reconstruction of facial and body defects due to birth disorders, trauma, burns, and diseases. Procedures include, but are also not limited to, scar revision surgery, burn surgery, lower extremity reconstruction, and breast reconstruction.
Cosmetic surgery aims to enhance your beauty. In contrast, plastic surgery fixes damages caused by trauma.
Cosmetic Surgery Training Is Separate
The training requirements for a cosmetic surgeon, according to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, have to have become familiar with tummy tucks, liposuction, breast surgery, and other breast surgeries. Each category dedicates itself to cosmetic surgery training. Therefore, a surgeon has to have at least 300 procedures down before they can cit in on a certification exam.
